Our Board of Trustees

Our Board of Trustees can have between 6 and 12 trustees.  We have three officers: the Chairman, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary. To use their particular skills and experience, other Trustees may lead in areas such as fundraising, public relations, human resources.

The New Selby War Memorial Hospital Volunteer Services Manager attends Board of Trustees meetings as needed. While they do not have voting rights, they play an active role in discussions and decision-making related to volunteers.

Mrs Carol Robson

Chair

I joined The Friends of Selby War Memorial Hospital in 2005 and took over the role of Chairperson in 2011.

I started my working career as a Shorthand Typist for a firm of Chartered Accountants in Driffield.

After 3 years I became a Civil Servant working as a Clerical Assistant with The Ministry of Public Building and Works at RAF Leconfield in Yorkshire. Following a move to Lincolnshire I worked for The Ministry of Defence at Kirton Lindsey Barracks and RAF Hemswell. Finally, I worked as an Admin Assistant at a primary school in Selby until I retired at the age of 60.

I have 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren.

I volunteer for Marie Curie and my interests are the theatre, craft fairs, antique fairs, music and football.

Mrs Marion Borthwick

I joined Friends of Selby Hospital in 2008 after my husband, Keith, died. I wanted to meet people and help with fundraising. I helped in the old hospital and continue to help in the new hospital including at coffee mornings and craft fairs.

I have made some good friends since I joined and I have also become a Trustee.

Mrs Barbara Longfield

Trustee

I was born in Hemingbrough, brought up in Barlby and have lived in Selby for sixty one years.

Selby War Memorial Hospital has played a significant part in my life, as it has in the lives of most local people. From caring for grandparents, two ‘accident prone’ sons and elderly parents.

From 1993 to 2005 I worked on the Abbey Ward, Castle Ward and the Day Ward as the visiting hairdresser, a role that I loved.

After retirement in 2005 I joined ‘The Friends’ and became part of a small group looking after the gardens and grounds. A role I particularly enjoyed as a keen gardener with a love of the outdoors. We became ‘redundant’ at the time of transfer to the new building. I remained a member of ‘The Friends’, becoming a trustee in recent years, doing various jobs, with the emphasis on fundraising nowadays.

It has proved to be a valuable means of making friends and remaining in contact with past colleagues. This was particularly helpful when my late husband, Ian, spend his last days in the loving care of the ward staff in 2012.

Mrs Charlotte Milnes

Trustee

After being fortunate to take early retirement, I started looking into doing some volunteering.
The Friends of the New Selby War Memorial Hospital was a group I had already had contact with through my late mum.

I qualified as a Nursery Nurse and over the years have worked with families as a children’s Nanny. After I got married, I set up and ran a Creche for a local training centre. I then went on to work in education for 24 years.

I have always been creative and very much enjoy crafting and coming up with ideas for fundraising. I came on board to help the charity with fundraising and to meet new friends.
